A Year in the South: Four Lives in 1865
Published in Hardcover by Palgrave Macmillan (01 November, 2002)
Author: Stephen Ash
Average review score:

So, Since Everyone Loves a Good Biograpy....
Try this one, it has four!!

Steve Ash brings four lives so alive that one feels one can reach back 135 years and touch them. So too with the details of their daily lives. The author does a great job capturing what life was really like back in 1865.

His style of writing makes it even more fun to read as the characters' stories "leapfrog" with the seasons, which spurs the reader on and on!

A great, must read!

Ellen Cumming

A good view of the aftermath of war
Stephen Ash takes you into four entirely different lives in the South during early reconstruction. You will not leave this book without actually feeling the despair, sadness, panic and even rebellion that many southern folks felt immediately after their defeat.
Read about the devastation that ultimately comes out of war. A must for any Civil War library.

Fascinating and well-written
A worm's-eye view of 1865 in the South as the Civil War grinds to a halt and social instability (verging on chaos) sets in. This is an excellent counterbalance to the big picture studies of Reconstruction which are too much policy and too little impact on daily life. Four wee-written biographies woven together; a book you will enjoy reading even if you start with no interest in the Civil War or the South.

The Best Short Stories by Black Writers; The Classic Anthology from 1899 to 1967
Published in Paperback by Little Brown & Co (Pap) (June, 1969)
Author: Langston Hughes
Average review score:

The Best of The Best
This book is a collection of short stories that was put together by the great Harlem Renaissance writer, Langston Hughes. Some authors whose works are also featured in the book are Richard Wright, Zora Neale Hurston, and Alice Walker. These stories are fun to read and they speak about the current issues that Black America was facing during the time period. This book is for anyone who is trying to better understand black thought during the 20th century.

"The Best Short Stories by Black Writers" is a #1 classic!
This book is an excellent example of reality. In each short story, there is some kind of relivance of growing up in a nation filled with crime, love, kindenss, hardships, and friendships. The writers express themselves so wonderfully, vivid pictures of the events are played in my head. It keeps middle-school children very attentive, mainly because they can easily relate to the troubles of growing up today. Teens can feel a sense of comfort in this book because they know they are not alone. This book contains collections by some of the best authors in the world. It really makes the african-american culture shine to where all cultures will enjoy!

Big Alfie Out of Doors Storybook
Published in Hardcover by (November, 1992)
Author: Hughes
Average review score:

Alfie is a big brother for my son
When my son was given this for his second birthday neither of us had any interest in it, and I put it away. Now some months later we are both hooked. We have been drawn into the world of Alfie, and love Shirley Hughes' stories. Alfie is the big brother my son doesn't have. To him the things that Alfie does: setting up a store in the garden, going to the sea; camping; and visiting granny are the 'adventures' he would like to have. The illustrations complement the story, and there are lots of thing to point out and look at. Alfie has become a firm favorite in this house.

Precious Stories, Precious art. Heirloom quality.
This is a delightful book, with stories that could happen to any child... a mom and grandmum pretending to buy store items from the kids store; a dad and son preparing for a night in a tent in the pasture at grandmother's house (and the "scene" before they go out... with a tired grandmother, a casual dad leaning on the counter...SO real!); the walk with grandmother past the sheep -- and the escaped sheep that follows; and the trip to the beach with a search for a favorite rock that's been lost! A treasure that belongs in every child's library, and most adults (with or without children). Will delight adults, too, who take the time to study expressions and postures.

Carol Of The Brown King : Nativity Poems
Published in School & Library Binding by Atheneum (October, 1998)
Authors: Ashley Bryan and Langston Hughes
Average review score:

Excellent introduction to poetry of Hughes
This book features poetry of Hughes for children. The poetry carefully uses language geared for children, uses repetition more than images. This results in text that conveys to children as much the careful, artful use of language as "fine poetry". The illustrations by Bryan are a superb counterpoint to the text - again geared intentional towards children - but showing excellent use of color and a realism appealing to adults.

This book succeeds in being truly for children without being sacchrine or insulting. Don't think of this as an "ethnic" book, it is far too good to be marginalized.

Poetically and spiritually moving;a must for any library
This book not only captures the beauty of Langston Hughes for young readers but also portrays the beauty of African Heritage within the powerful meaning of the story of Christ's birth. I ended up buying two copies on my first round because it was such a wonderful piece of work for both chidren and adults!

Catherine of Genoa
Published in Hardcover by Paulist Press (August, 1979)
Author: Serge Hughes
Average review score:

The brief Purgation and Purgatory took my breath away.
I have not read any Christian mystic who more brillantly captured the excitement of the concept of God's infinite love. Where Luther or Augustine wrote volumes to give voice to the experience of unmerited grace, Catherine of Genoa does full justice to the topic in a few lines.

By contrast, the Spiritual Dialogue rings a little hallow after the thunder clap of Catherine's Purgation and Purgatory. The shadow-boxing between Body, Soul, Spirit and Self Love offers little fresh insight and no drama.

love from the LORD
St Catherine of Genoa (1447-1510) has a special importance for me because it is her after whom I was named. :D On 13 January 1463, at the age of sixteen, Catherine was married to Guiliano Adorni. He is described as a man of "strange and recalcitrant nature" who wasted his substance on disorderly living. Having little in common with her husband, their marriage had many difficult years. As did Jeanne Guyon, Catherine maintained a strong spiritual relationship despite opposition in her marriage. Guiliano became a member of the Third Order of St. Francis, and both he and Catherine worked among the poor and the sick. In 1497, she nursed her husband through his last illness. In his will he extolled her virtues and left her all his possessions. Instead of becoming bitter for her experience, Catherine brought joy and peace to the sick and lame as rector of the hospital of St. Lazarus in Genoa. Although Catherine was no scholar, she was, at the same time, inspired, vehement and warm-hearted. Her work reads as though she poured out what she had to say on paper, not staying to choose words, not revising or hardly revising. If she is sometimes careless of exactitude, she compensates for it by spontaneity. In her simple honest expression, Catherine is able to address the complex issue, for example, of what is the cause of the LORD our GOD's great love for us who are so set against her, and what are we that GOD would be mindful of us. "Know first that I am GOD who change not, and that I loved man before I created him, with an infinite, pure, simple and clear love for which there was no cause, save that I cannot but love what I have created and ordained to minister, in its degree, to my glory. And I have provided man richly with all fit means to reach his end, with natural gifts and supernatural graces which he will never lack in so far as they depend on me; nay more, with my infinite love which by divers ways and means surrounds him so that he may be subject to my care." If you are interested in the faith expression of a woman of grace and courage, this book will be interesting to you.

Christian Counselor's Pocket Guide
Published in Paperback by Bethany House (December, 1985)
Author: Selwyn Hughes
Average review score:

A good place for the Christian counselor to start!
Selwyn Hughes does a good job in dealing with the most common problems people face (Christian and Non-Christian sections inlcluded) and with the basic objections you will face in witnessing. Scripture references and a discussion of each issue are side by side on separate pages.

A book I recommend to all Christians to review and keep on their bookshelves! This compact reference manual will come in handy in moments of need

Handy and Helpful!
Do not let the size of this book fool you. It is jam packed with great information. It is a "must have" for anyone working to counsel others. It clearly and concisely answers the most common questions people have. General areas covered are:
Difficulties of Unbelievers, Problems Christians Face and Intellectual Arguements. Specific questions are answered and backed up with Scripture. Christian counselors and workers should commit this book to memory.

Wilderness Navigation: Finding Your Way Using Map, Compass, Altimeter, & Gps
Published in Paperback by Mountaineers Books (April, 1999)
Authors: Bob Burns, Mike Burns, and Paul Hughes
Average review score:

Wilderness navigation
This book may be small enough to carry as a primer on land navigation for folks venturing into the wilds without knowledge or experience of map and compass skills.

However, as a text on land navigation skills it was disappointing. Better choices would be the Land Navigation Handbook: The Sierra Club Guide to Map and Compass by W. Kals (excellent) or M. Ferguson's GPS Land Navigation: A Complete Guidebook for Backcountry Users of the NAVSTAR Satellite System (also excellent).

Excellent introductory volume
I have been teaching orienteering for seven years, and this book is everything I could ask for in an introductory text. There are more advanced books, it is true, but this book is reasonably priced, highly readable, and complete enough for the beginning through intermediate adventurer.

clear, concise, complete
Clear, concise and complete guide to wilderness travel. Well written with appropriate practice problems. Excellent book which is small and light enough to be in ones pack. But you really should study the book before you go into the wilderness. Reasonably priced.
